But I don't think of a game clip as a catch keeper. I think of it as the last step in landing a fish after gaffing it. So probably wouldn't want to land a big fish without it.

This is my understanding, although disclaimer, I don't have too much experience with my game clip sadly hah.

Game clip is just to bleed it out, not to transport or keep fresh...from my understanding they bleed out better in the water no?

Transport/keep fresh your fish on a game clip in the water for too long and you will realize quickly that this is not the best option

Yep, about 60 seconds of dunking back and forth into water after ripping a gill should be plenty. Stick the fish in kill bag after that. And get it on ice.
