Do you want a little radio to chit-chat with your friends and heckle boaters? Or do you want a high powered piece of navigational/safety equipment which will save your ass in an emergency?
I went for the latter... Standard Horizon HX-870. High transmitting power, integrated GPS, and DSC distress function. Not cheap, but how much is your life really worth to you? You don't need it until you need it, then you REALLY need it. $0.02 |

Which ever one you get, make sure it is waterproof and floats. Should be able to get a decent one for around a hundred bucks or so.

I used to have a Cobra one and it worked perfect. But it got stolen along with all my fishing stuff.
I then upgraded to the HX870 specifically because it has the DSC function that transmits your location. Hopefully I never need to use that feature but I have peace of mind knowing that it is there, specially because I go out alone most of the time. |
