Please note that if the fish in the picture is caught in Pacific Ocean, it is sheephead (without S).
It is a distant to Atlantic Porgy, which is sheepshead (with the S) Sheephead=Pacific Ocean Sheepshead=Atlantic Ocean Per Wikipedia: The sheepshead is found in coastal waters along the western Atlantic, from Nova Scotia to Brazil, but the greatest concentration is around southwest Florida. [3] Although the Sheepshead Bay section of Brooklyn, in New York City, was named after the fish, [4] it is now rarely found that far north. However, they just recently started to return to the area in small numbers, with a few being caught in the Jamaica Bay and on the Rockaway Reef. This is a common mistake and I have seen it in a book published for kids in California and travel book for Baja! I think because most people have heard the name 'sheepshead bay" and think that is where the name comes from. No criticism intended. Last edited by Mahigeer; 04-01-2020 at 11:21 AM. |
