I heard the water is below the boat launch, so kayakers and tubers will have the place to themselves. May have to get creative launching...

Was just running there a couple days ago and the water was above the launch at the boat ramp. A better place to launch is at the very end of the east wing, You can park on the road by the portapotty, there is a good opening to put the kayak in. You are then right on trout grounds without the paddle. If you get there before sunrise you have the whole area to yourself for a good hour.

So how did you do? I've fished Miramar many times. A few years ago it was basically drained for constuction of a new pumping station or some such thing. It is my understanding that all the hold over trout (ie the big ones) didn't make it. I'm wondering if the lake has bigger models again?

I ended up doing some surf fishing with my brothers, they wanted to fish but do not have a kayak so my plans were changed. Trout setup works great for surf perch, I was catching them on almost every other cast.
at Miramar you can still launch in the boat launch area, you just have to launch off of the shore right next to it. They stock Miramar with good size trout but I doubt that any would be able to hold over through the summer and all the poachers. Unfortunately the ranger said that this will most likely be the last year that Miramar is stocked with quality sized fish due to lack of funding. It looks as though Miramar is going down the same path that lake Murray went down. They used to stock large trophy trout in Murray years ago but lack of funding put an end to that. |

I've metered sections of Lake Miramar at 90 ft, and have known people to fish trout there in the summer in those deep spots. So yes they have/had hold over trout. When they did the retrofit thing the lake was bacically drained so trout didn't hold over to get big. I was fishing one of the docks years ago and there was a HUGE trout hanging around in the toolies and under the dock. Everyone freaked out and started trying to hit it in the head with lures. Of course it ignored all this and glided away. That trout was easily 8+ lbs. I don't believe they were stocking them at that size then I assume it was a hold over.
