Remember the longer you wait the more damage you could be doing to your injury.
When I hurt my arm I went to the doctor 2 days later and he had me in for surgery a week later to avoid further damage and to make the surgery as easy as possible. If it was the muscle rupturing the more you use it the more it will travel down your arm making the surgery more difficult if that's what is needed. |

Being that this is a forum for guys that SOMETIMES outsmart a fish, we use a plastic stick to float among whales and sharks, and take chances between crashing walls of water on the beach, we are not the brainiest guys out there!
Dude, I had a shoulder surgery, after trying to take care of it different non surgical ways for a couple of years. Last January I had knee surgery, did not wait on this one at all. Do not listen to US! You want to dick around with your shoulder.....there is a reason you are not the doctor. ![]() If you reallly want help, buy a tendem kayak and lots of beer for your friend. ![]() Hope that it is something that you can take care of easily. |

dislocated the right...and tore something in the left...
for both, physical therapy was the ticket to recovery...both shoulders are 100% for the most part... just a word of note on physical therapy, both from personal experience and obsevation of others... physical therapy works...but only if you are a participant... just going to the apointment once a week don't cut it...they will give you daily excersizes to perfom...they must be done daily... don't just go to the appointments, do the once a week deal, and then complain how physical theray doesn't work! you gotta do what they say! |

Your most correct Josh, you gotta participate in the therapy and NOT just during the supervised sessions. My Daughter is a P/T and she will tell ya, the ones that don't recover or as fast as they could, are the people that don't dont perform the exersizes as and when told to....Eric |

LOL steveooo...I said that wasn't an option....even though I am eyeing the PA. But since fully loaded that thing weighs almost 140lbs, I am still gonna need some strength before I pick up one of those. And I just looked on Hobie's website. It is listed under boats, and not kayaks?

I know, I know. Just testing the water ![]() My major in college was Kinesiology/ Sports Medicine. We worked on alot of bum shoulders. I think there is a good mix of sound advice here. I think Charles was going in the direction that I would initially tell you to go. Best thing you can do is let the body try to repair the damage on its own initially. For shoulders, this usually means to immobilize it, which is a pain in the butt, but effective. You can buy a shoulder sling at walgreens for pretty cheap. I'd get one that supports the shoulder, as well as straps it to the body. You use your arm so much in the day, it's too easy to cheat with the ones that don't have the body strap. Even sleep with it, I'm sure you've already woken yourself up with shooting pain from moving your arm around a night? I know I do when I re-injure mine. Strap your arm up with your hand elevated higher than your elbow. For the first week, do ice only for about 20 min, 5X a day. After the week of rest, light movement is good. Your body will tell you what is appropriate. Like Andy said, you can switch between heat and ice now, and start looking at some PT. Also, like it already has been mentioned, if you do PT, it will only be as effective as you apply yourself to it. This is where the advice of someone qualified to evaluate your injury would be helpful. You don't want to download a generic shoulder PT program off the internet, because there will be some movements that wont be appropriate to do with certain types of injuries, and you could be doing more harm than good. If you have good insurance, go get it checked out. If not, a good rule of thumb is "If it hurts, Don't do it". No sense in re-injuring it slightly every day... Geez, throw a little rain into the mix, and we all turn into doctors. I'm fishing this week- Rain be dammed! ![]() |

paddling is my therapy...
Sorry to hear about your injury.
I had an old Dirt bike injury that I never got checked out, I just lived with it. Slowly, and because I am stubborn, I worked through it, although every now and the then I would get "the twinge"... Then I got a Kayak, and started paddling...lots! Usually trying to keep up with Kevin aka "the kid" to try and get a bit of wisdom, or maybe even a left over fish or two!! There have been days I have paddled for 12 hours, and could hardly move in the morning, but I can say my shoulder is back to 100%!!! In fact, although I can see huge advantages to the hobie peddle system, I love paddling for my shoulders!! I hope for you your shoulder injury works out as well as mine did... ![]() |
