Last time in DP a little after Xmas. The bait sucked big time, half dead small anchovies. The kid at the barge said there were some sardines mixed in, I did't see one. Even with the half dead bait pulled a couple short butts on a real snotty day in the harbor mouth.

See you guys out there on Sunday. Will try to be there by 6:30. Blue revo. Matt

Weather is looking too good to pass on this. I will make some smelt with the dip net and see look for you on the water, I usually start out south of Belmont pier and work to the north, hopefully the "Current Gods" are with me. and make a nice drift,

Hey Maui Jim,

Are you talking about LB? I think that MtnByker, Ericko and I are gonna be at DP. Comon down to DP. Unless MtnByker is willing to go to Long Beach. I kind of committed to DP, but can change if needed.

I used to go catch bait at that pier with a Sabiki and chum with bread. Do you ever catch smelt from your kayak? All I've ever caught on a Sabiki are sardines and macs. Would be nice to get a few smelt for the flatties.

Matt

Gotta find the right size Smelt which can be the tricky part. I caught 5 or 6 fish in early Dec. on Smelt near the Queen Mary. There is a boat launch ramp about 1/4 mile upstream that you can launch at, but it costs $12 for the day. They do have a free wash station though.

Last time I made bait I had to go thru alot of smelt fry. scratched out short of a dozen 4-6". smelt. Its been about a month so the fry should be getting just right size.,
I use the sailboat area launch and parking is free from the street. ( I'm cheap free launch/free bait) easy parking in the early morning, they use to have a water source, but its was disconnected when they rebuilt the restrooms but the showers work for the rods.... I live about 10-15 minutes from there.
The winds should die down Sat. afternoon, should be a spring like day on Sun.

I will probably go to LBC (it's close) and I usually make bait from the dock off Appian Way with dip net, by the lifegard station. with some White bread. the only time I can catch smelt is up in Santa Barbara or in the kelp. have not much luck on the kayak for smelt in LBC but still try while drifting have caught some decent size lizard fish for halis though
