Nice work! You've got some skrill! add a key chain floater to the hand strap part and it won't go too far down the drink.(thinking out loud)

Very nice basket weave handle! They take for ever, I did a jig stick not to long ago with one and it probably took me close to 4 hours to weave.
Be sure to spray some spar urethane on the cord to seal it!

well done, I appreciate the detail, make sure it floats before you take it out...

Thanks. It does float but more vertical with the hook down, at least that's what the old one did. Will definitely look for a floater to attach to the lanyard.

It's like basket weaving but with cord and you wrap around your blank.
There's a tutorial buried in the BD rod building forum from the master himself, Steve "Rooster" Paterson of Rooster Custom Rods. I was fortunate enough to learn from him live in person. Hard to type it out and explain step by step (I'm not the best at it) so here's a couple more pics I took during the build. Once you figure it out it's fairly simple, just tedious. Just ordered a skiff anchor and some lasso rope. Hope to get front row seats to the La Jolla rodeo.

if your gaff is sealed on both ends it should float fine being bamboo, otherwise you could fill it with insulation foam that comes in a can. that way no water gets in it and it stays buoyant.

Just beautiful weaving. Maybe too much so. I'd cry if I lost a gaff like that. Or just look forward to making another one. Mike

That looks awesome!
You should edit the title to, "Made me a bad-ass gaff". Just curious, what was the overall cost?

Really nice gaff and the in-process pics explain it well. Fishinkid, those are nice rod pictures too. I have wrapped about 20 rods and done a few weaves (Raider Logo, Dodger Logo, and names). I have never done a cord wrap (seems easy enough) or a turks head. How is the turks head started and ended (any pictures?)

Squidco sells the hook for about $4 and also ~20ft bamboo stalk for under $20. Cord can run around $10 for 100-300 yards give or take depending on type. At start it's a little more than a similar off-the-shelf gaff but you'll have enough materials to build yourself a few more.
This one was a simple "boyscout woggle". Lots of info online and this one you can by hand. After tying I tighten it all around then tuck the ends as flush as I can. A drop of superglue underneath to hold it in place and spar urethane seals it all in. I've pulled on it with a decent amount of force and it doesn't shift one bit. There's a tang on the end of the hook that keeps it from pulling out vertically. It's also epoxied in and the cord secures that bad boy in place. Hoping to test it on a homeguard soon.
