Spectra is only a kelp line for me it's a love hate thing. I'd do what he said and stick with the mono and if you are fishing with others the spectra will cut everyones line if it touches it when fish is running. Keep that pole in the kelp with a foot and a half of fluoro leader.nice setup mine is forever lost rip la jolla kelp.

Spectra is a great for all your reels. Its good for catching marlin,tunas,dorados,you name it. Just vary your topshot length for targeted species. Don't confuse fishing rod with fishing pole!

As already has been posted.

Have a shop Top Shot your braid with 100 yards of Mono. (enough so the knot doesn't have to pass through the guides when Yo-Yoing.

I use 40lb P-line, 30 works good too.

If you are yo-yoing and have 100 yards of mono as a top shot, and the spectra never leaves the spool, what is the point of having sprectra on the reel at all? Why not just go with all mono? Even if you get a big enough fish to pull enough line that you have spectra in the water, you still have 100 yards of mono to get kelped, rocked, etc? Am I missing something here?

Its the versatility of it all. 100yds of mono would be good for marlin and bigger grade tunas,whereas, 100ft of mono would be better for more inshore fish,say yellowtail,t-sharks,and such. If one wants to fish near structure or kelp shorten the topshot or replace all that mono with a 3-4ft piece of florocarbon. Its cheaper to re-spool 100ft or 100yds of mono than the whole reel,about 300 yds. Some have dedicated rods and reels for every type of targeted species. ie..straight mono for yo yo fishing only.

a good knot should pass through rod guides with no resistence.

spectra? i would never use it for a jig/cast application, that stuff is such a pain for so many reasons....expencive, doesnt cast well, hard to get out the backlashes and gets damaged easily..
the only time i use spectra is when fishing in the kelp or trolling next to the kelp, even then i will put about 150yrds of 30-40mono on first as a backing, then put ~200yrds topshot of 50-65 spectra, this saves some $green$ and also keeps the spectra from cutting so deep into the spool.
also spectra to flouro/mono use an albright (sp?) knot.
