I can add .02.
I have a hobby of making my own plastic, and have taken the color thing to the extremes, as part of my 'product development'. Both in research and as an applied science. My advice in the kelp...Black when the sky and or water are cloudy. Yellow when it's clear. Everything in between seems to be nuance. Presentation and confidence are as important as color. I myself am a tackle whore so I can not give you advice on consolidating gear... however when it comes to baits. The best advice I can give you is go to the War Baits facebook page and look through their pictures.
People have posted some really nice looking plastic/ war head combos on there. The popular Big Hammer swimbaits are a must, but you should definitely add some creature baits to your arsenal.
