I have seen a coralation between light line and big halis. I don't always use the light stuff but most of my bigger fish have been on the 10lb. I'm not a meat fisherman and enjoy a challenge but when you're using a little bay bass rod, set the hook and feel heavy dead weight and then big old slow head shakes there is kinda a "Oh Shit, did I bring a knife to a gun fight?" moment.
