The pack I bought at Albertson's was 2 planks for $3, not too bad, however I originally thought it was 1 plank. One side is sanded all smooth and the other side is rough. I soaked the plank for at least 2 hours. Fence boards is a great idea you can buy a full board and make a few planks, and probably for about the same price as I paid.

next time try some alder wood and / or pecan.
I place the lemon on the fish about 5 mins after I place it on the plank to cook

Years ago I heard a long joke about cooking mackerel on a cedar plank that ended with eating the plank and throwing the mack away. I actually have a few cedar planks. I'll give em a try. Mike

I'm all for trying different types of planks for BBQing fish. I love the flavor that smoke gives the fish.
