Jim Day: "[Turns out he was trying to be polite, staying outside of us, and actually still fishing for yellows, and sure enough he hooked one.... a monster that broke him off on I think structure.]"

All I know is he spun about 100 yards of line off my reel on his first run, like it was cotton candy; I gained some line back when he pulled another 50 yards before busting off. Need to re-tie a top shot after that.

Jim Day: "[Then he had another one hit that I saw and that one literally almost ripped the rod out of his hands. I was like holy SH!T that fish hit hard. It took a ton of drag and the broke off when he was trying to stop it from wrapping on some guys anchor.]"

Yep, I had the drag set really light, heard the clicker, set the drag on a lighter setting, saw the direction it was headed, and set the drag a bit heavy. I wasn't expecting to almost lose a whole set-up, but dam if that fish didn't almost swim away with the whole rig.

Jim Day: "[I felt for the guy. I mean he's a good friend, and he was fighting the good fight, and frankly the fish were winning]"

Dame if the weren't; I guess that's why it's called fishing and not catching.

Jim Day: "[I've been there and it hurts.]"

You took the words right out of my mouth.

Jim Day: "[He had skunk so thick on him I was smelling it a hundred yards away with my nose in the water. ]"

Yeah, ya would of thought I hadn't showered fur over a month also.

Honestly Jim, that's about the way I felt, esp after the next one headed straight for the anchor line of that Farolon, and not a dam thing I could do but sit back on the ride right to it. I almost fell out of my yak when those guys asked if I wanted them to pull the hook; total class act all the way (thanks again guys!). I felt the fish wrap the anchor line, and thought there goes another. Jim, thanks for the assist with that one!

But overall, trips just don't get better than this one.

No problem at all. I was just glad to see you get one.

Nice Pics

Pretty magical place to fish, the C.I's give you a glimpse into the past; you get a sense of what much of California was like 60 years ago.

What is also cool about your trip is that you guys fished the very grounds that the ancient Chumash did in their own version of the kayak the Tomol hundreds of years ago....

PS

Im sure you know about the big whiteys that love to fish their too. The rookery on the island is like a drive thru for them.

Yep, we're aware of their predilection for the area. I can't say I ever saw Jim's feet in the water, I simply didn't worry about the tax man, as I'm sure there's not much I'll be able to do about it, if my number ever comes up; Just fished my tookus off and enjoyed the spectacular conditions.

You got that right!!!

My friend Gernsey told me that they saw thirty dead seals in the kelp in a single day a few weeks before, and Steve said they saw several headless seal corpses there on Wednesday while we were there. They aggressively hunt that island no doubt.

I'd bet that island has the highest concentration of adult whites in the area, kind of like our "Lupe" and it's also the hangout for lots of big adult female 500+ pound Makos. Call me paranoid but I did not bleed any of my fish, and basically pulled them out of the water, and got them stored inside the yak as quickly as possible.

When I got that big Black alongside the kayak I was well off the island in probably thousands of feet of water. Prime monster Mako territory, in fact I have fished them right there and the past. One of my concerns was that a really large Mako might come up and nail him before I could get him righted and on his way down. I've seen them feed on 200 pound plus swordfish in that area right on the surface, vicious explosive attacks you could see for hundreds of yards, it would not of surprised me at all if one had shown up.

All part of the game. I just kept my feet out of the water, and my eyes open. One of these days they are going to get one of us, I suppose I got just about as much chance of running into one as anyone else, maybe a little more of a chance when fishing out there.

Personally I get more nervous fishing seabass in the dark at La Jolla, my take is the midsized adults follow the whiteseabass around as they are a good high energy meal. At SBI though your dealing with the full sized adult breeders stalking big prey both sealines and elephant seals. I would never fish there from a kayak at night, I take my chances, but that would just completely freak me out.
