They are pushing to make it 4WD ONLY too!

And yeah, there are plenty of other launches in San Diego. They are nice because there is actually still open parking next to them.

I got yelled at over the weekend for going threw the opening trying to keep from getting stuck in the sand. Lady Life guards yells, "Slow Down." Caught me off guard, but I slowed down. I think if we are respectful to the rules they too will be respectful to the users as well.

launch spots

I haven't got my yak yet but has anyone launched from Torrey Pines state beach? The parking lot just east of the tracks looks kinda cool, just walk your yak under the railroad tracks and your on the beach.
How about Silver Strand state beach?

Finding a place that you can get your kayak to and successfully launch from is only half the battle. Each city is allowed to impose it's own restrictions on the beaches and near shore water along it's boundary. Some will not allow you to launch from certain areas (surfing and swimming beaches are examples). Others will not allow you to fish in other areas (near shore swimming areas and navigation channels are examples).

If you are confident in your yak surf skills you can launch from about any beach. But swim areas are off limits though and you are always at the whims of the LGs. I paddled out super early at Fletchers Cove(Solana) and Bucaneer Beach(Oside) and by the time I headed in, around noon, the beach and water were pack and the LGs wouldn't let me land. I had to come in a few hundred yards down the beach. Thankfully I had a good cart. I launched out of Dohenie years ago and after braving the pounding 1' surf I got a lecture from an LG that I was too close to the surfers and that I could lose control of my kayak. It was difficult to stay polite, but I did. I say go for it. Mike
