Before I got the hobie welder, I patched my canoe heating up a butter knife with a propane torch, and put mesh that got the job done to, it was like cauterization of a wound and flattened out some bumps.

Save any trimmings from installs of hatches or whatever. can also trim thin strips from inside underneath the hatch.
